Paying off credit cards
Hello everyone!

As most of us are going to experience... my wife and I will receive a check from paying too much taxes throughout the year.

Also as most, we are in debt. We have late bill and credit cards.

My question is this,

Since a lot of the amount that is owed on credit cards are late fees and interest, how can you decrease the payoff amount in order to completely and close the account?

Do you ask for charges taken off? Do you as for a lower rate to be applied to the current balance? What do you have to do in order to make it cheaper to pay those cards off?

Is it as simple as telling them that you'll pay off what you used? In otherwords pay off the limit of the card?

Thank you very much and God bless,
Johnathan

Eph. 3:20 - 21
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us [Holy Spirit], unto him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus [body of Christ] unto all generations for ever and ever. Amen.

Maybe because it's 7:00 am and I'm somewhat sleepy, but I'm not getting your post at all... seems pretty screwed.

Let's see:

In your first question, you say that a lot of amount is owed and you are late. How many months late? How much are the late fees? How much do you owe? You also ask how to get ride of that... well... it's obvious... paying. I hope you earn enough to eat and pay your utility bills. If after this you still have money which you spend for joy... well... it's all about preferences... save the money that you are going to spend in a restaurant or in a game, and use it to pay debt... otherwise... spend the money in whatever you want and keep increasing debt and late fees... Your choice... If you just earn for basic needs... consider seriously a debt consolidator.

2- Why are your charges should be taken off? It's your own fault... not lender's fault. I'm frank with you... you are the business... you do not pay, they earn more money... thanks to that... these companies earn money, and at the same time, they do not lose too much money with delinquent accounts like yours. I never asked for this, because I knew the moment that my debt was raising, and I stopped shopping and dining out, and I got ride of everything. In addition, I always paid in time. I never asked for lower rates either... the lenders offered that to me, but being delinquent... it's not the best moment to ask for lower rates... You ask again to what to do to pay the debts, to make it cheaper... well... cheaper no way... even more being delinquent... just sacrifice yourself... be aggressive and do not spend an extra dime... save it for your debt.

Last question. NO Even if you have an excellent standing with one lender, if you do something wrong... it's probably they will crush you. If you do it several times, like it seems you do... you will need to pay everything, and keep using the account with minimum balances... paying always in time and then... maybe they will end up decreasing APR's.

I hope I helped... and sorry if I being too Frank...

I recommend you to check your credit... and be ready for bad 400s news... sorry. At least, you noticed... never is too late if you notice...

Most lenders will not back down. Even if you're in good standing, if you ask for a CLD they will probabaly not grant it.

If your card is an Amex, call and inquire about the Oasis program. If it's another, also call and close the account and explain your hardship. Needless to say your CS will take another hit aside from what you have already taken with the lates.

OK, here's what happened...
Alrighty, here's the scoop.

My family and I were living in Louisiana. When we got the credit card(s) we paid them on time with no problem.

Then I acquired a job in Oklahoma.

So we had to move. I moved prior to my wife and kids to search for a home. We found one, we paid the earnest money and the deal fell through, there goes a $1000. OK, so we keep looking, any money we had to pay for hotels and such... went toward that house that we didn't get. So, what do we have... I have to live somewhere.. hey, let's use the credit cards...

Obviously, we racked them up pretty quick. Reached the limit on one... two...three and finally our fourth... and the.... dun dun dun... job ended... had to find another job... found one three weeks later, making less pay.

So, I gritted my teeth and travelled back up to Oklahoma and started working again. But after two weeks of living in a hotel, I find a place to rent. Worked out a deal to pay part of the money for rent through out the month. It worked out. So, we finally found ahome within our budget. Paid only $500 for earnest, and we were blessed enough to be able to pay that and fudge on other things, during this time my wife and kids were going hungary, she was offered a fifth credit card, so we did. Now we have five credit cards all maxed in a matter of 4-5 months. What else were we supposed to do? I couldn't move back to Louisiana due to no jobs being available for my industry of work. I also had to take out a loan in order to pay for two weeks of hotel use.

Anyway, all that plus the cost of moving... really put us behind... trying to catch up on credit cards and other bills... we were late for our 2nd mortgage payment. Whcih we are finally catching up to... Just for reference... we moved back in August of 2007. So we are coming up to our first income tax in which is around half of what we are in debt. So, to maximize the amount of debt paid off, how can we make this to where it will work out to get the most paid off.

As you can see not trying to get anything for free... I am actually working to take care of this and no longer be late or anything, in which prior to all of this we had no credit cards and no debt other than out mortgage and car payment.

BTW, Bahamut, I would probably try not to be as 'frank' when you meet someone for the first time. Situations are different for each person. They are almost never the same. In my case I had to move for a better life for my family, not simply because I wanted too. And as for the credit cards, how else was it supposed to happen? And no, our families do not have the financial background to assist in something like this in other than assisting with their time... in which did happen with the move. That only cost us around... $600.

God bless,
Johnathan

I apologize pal. I know the situations are different for each person. Now you explained the full story you have your reasons...

I'm pretty busy now, I will take my time later and I will try to give some more advice, however, seems hard. I think the best for you is a financial advisor... try to get a debt consolidation before your credit goes worst. By that way, you will pay in full all accounts and you will have one monthly payment, probably lower that the amount you pay now (probably you can combine the debt from your car loan as well)
