credit card debt help
ok, i was young and stupid in college, now im out of school and want to pay back debt.
i originally owed about $1800 to a credit card, but on my credit report it is saying $5997. There is no way i can afford to pay that.

1) Is there anyway i can pay the $1800 or maybe even a little bit more and be done with it? Who should i call to negotiate this if i can, the credit card company or the collection agency?

2) on my credit report, i see multiple collection agencys for the same debt, im assuming it was sold from one collection agency to another. For the ones who sold it off and are no longer trying to collect the debt, is there any way i can have those entries removed from my credit report?

3) I paid off one of my debts at the bank about 2 weeks ago, there are still entries on my credit report from the bank and the collection agencies. How to resolve this?

please help me out. Thanks.

You can always call the bank / debt collector and try to find out what to do... However, these situations are hard:

1- As mentioned... talk to the bank... however, if the debt is sold to collection agencies... the bank has nothing to do with... if your debit has been travelling from one agency to another... problably you have more debt due financial charges and penalties.

2- I doubt it... but you always can call the agencies and try to negotiate... Do not try credit repair programs... all those are scam

3- Waiting 7 to 10 years,... I'm sorry. Even if you paid off... it stays on your file for a long time.

1. If your original debt is $1800 and you have not use the card since, you need to find out how it managed to get to $5997. That would be your first step. You need to know where that number is coming from. I don't think you could have $3000 in fees accrued.

2. Once you find out why you owe so much if you didn't borrow that much then you can talk to the current agency that is trying to collect the money and see if they will negotiate with you, provided that the amount they are asking for is legit. If it is not legit you may need legal council.

3. If the amount is legit the agency should negotiate an amount that you can pay to be done with it otherwise they will most lilkely get nothing.

4. As far as the credit bureau's, if you have a dispute you can make a notation on your bureau. You would need to contact all three major bureau's, transunion, equifax, and experian. You can also ask them how to have these things removed from your credit and if they are not legitimate and you can prove it they will remove them from your credit file.

Hope this helps.
