hi, I suggest that you speak with a lawyer who deals in this area of credit default on your options.

Beware of credit repair companies on the internet, as many are unscrupulous. If you choose one, get an iron-clad guarantee.

Did Discover turned your debt over to a credit agency? If so, then the agency will hardball you for a long time, but may eventually settle. I do know of cases where this has happened.

If you do come to some settlement terms, then be sure that part of the terms include that the credit bureaus will be informed that the bill is settled and paid in full. That is very important for your credit rating. Get an agreement in writing. That way, if they do not report that the bill is settled, you can send the written agreement and your cancelled check to the credit bureaus and they will make the changes.

Good luck to you. It is laudable that you are looking to avoid bankruptcy. Again, a lawyer might be able to help you sort out your options.
