Merchant account 101
What is a merchant account? Is a duly registered business a must to obtain a merchant account? I hope to be enlightened.

A merchant account allows a business to accept credit cards, debit cards, gift cards and other forms of payment cards.

If an online business has its own merchant account, it makes for credibility and respectability, because it is a well known fact that one has to provide several credentials and undergo close scrutiny, to acquire a merchant account. There are a variety of fees associated with a merchant account. Stores with a low monthly sales volume should look for a merchant account with a higher transaction fee in exchange for a lower base monthly fee and visa versa.

When looking for a merchant account, start with your current bank. A number of large institutions provide merchant account services over the web. Shop around and look for the deal that’s best for your particular needs. Ensure that your merchant account provides a payment gateway that is compatible with your ecommerce store software.
