Debt Collector

This Debt collector called me and told me that this account that I had with
another company is about to charge off and wanted to see if I can pay at least half to avoid the charge off so it won't go on my credit report. They called me because they said they noticed a recent payment I made to the original creditor. My question is should I believe anything the debt collector is saying or should I just continue to pay the original creditor? Thanks.

Did you get a letter in the mail saying this account has been turned over to a debt collector?

Hmm, that is weird because back in the days of my credit trouble I had gotten a letter from the debt collector themselves. If I were you, I would investigate this further and I would also be paying the main credit card and not the so called debt collector until you get confirmation..
