stay away from capital one
I am 41 years old with many credit cards and perfect credit. I want to strongly advise people against Capital one. They have been doing a lot of advertising lately "what's in your wallet". The fact is they have the worst customer service I've ever experienced with any company. I don't know if they've been growing too fast or simply do not care. It became apparent to me that they have no customer service after I made a call inquiring about a charge that I didn't remember. I simply asked if there was a way I could see a copy of my signature on it. They transferred my call severral times and eventually to their fraud department. I was on hold for over 30 minutes. Without telling me, they cancelled my credit card and sent me a new one. Now all the other charges I made on the card they cancelled were suddenly in dispute. I called to tell them and was put on hold for 40 minutes. They kept putting legitimate charges in dispute and return charges back on my account. This continued for 6 months. Every call to clear this up resulted in 40 mins, 50 mins and even over 1 hour wait times. To make a long story short, I paid off this account (including the charges that were not mine). When I called to cancel this account, which you cannot do on their website, I was put on hold for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then I called from another phone and told them I was calling for something else and they transferred me to a manager in 10 minutes. I cancelled my account with him. It's funny because their phone system automatically says that this call may be monitored for quality assurance. I wish they would but they really dont. They don't care, they are playing the numbers game with your and my credit. Companies like this should go out of business.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I think they are also here where I live, though I'd never use them. I'd stick with Visa, they have good support and always are contactable easily 24/7. They even call you, if they feel a fishy transaction happens. They saved me once, when accidentally someone charged 10,000 instead of 1,000 to my CC for a product.

What are the benifits from them? Visa gives airmiles and points to me for transactions.

I was thinking of signing up for Capital One a couple of months ago but I was advised by a good friend at University not to because in their opinion, Capital One seemed to be totally negligent towards paying customers in terms of their customer services. I must admit I have found them appealing in terms of services which they offer, but if they have these types of problems with their customer services then I really cannot see it being worthwhile to any customer to take up an account with them.
It was only 2 months ago that Watchdog fined Capital One for their poor customer services, and for not providing all the information for certain policies to their customers. If this is still the case, and with the incident above and from what I have heard through a friend, then for me they are definately worth avoiding.

My personal experience with capital one has been a pleasant one actually. Every time I call I have been treated with respect and never handled poorly, they are prompt in answering my questions and providing me with accurate information.
The only problem I see from a credit reporting standpoint is that capital one does NOT report your full credit line to agencies, who in turn use your highest balance carried as your limit. This can, for those of us who are using the capital one visa as our starter card...skew the debt-credit ratio in favor of a lower FICO. This problem is slated to be fixed on all accounts by 2008.
As far as I know, Capital One is a decent company...not one I would have picked to begin my file with in retrospect (considering the reporting issue) but still a good one nonetheless.

Personally, I have never experienced any problems with Capital One. However, I understand how frustrating it is, especially when you have a bad experience with customer service, after being such a loyal customer. The best way to deal with these situations, is to write a letter to Capital One, stating your specific problems with them, and ask them, how they plan to rectify the problem. Sometimes, you can get a lower apr because of it, turning a bad situation, into a better one. To check out better options for you, go to Compare Credit Cards Online and Apply For Credit Cards
Good Luck!
