Providian.

This was one of my first credit cards ever. They were the only ones that would accept me at such a young age. That should have been a tip off but no, I was really young. I hardly ever used it and paid all my bills on time. After a few years, I got rid of the card, canceled it and everything went okay. Years later, Providian called me to let me know I was in debt with them for $9,000! I told them I never used it, canceled it, etc. but they said there was nothing they could do. I provided them with everything they needed and asked for but still, they weren't giving in. Now I have to pay back this debt plus interest which equals to more than $22,000!

Stay away from Providian!

Are you saying you don't believe you owe the original $9,000? They're required to provide proof of the charges. Send them a certified letter formally asking them to provide documentation for the debt.

So you are now going to pay $22,000? I think that is a rip-off. If you always paid the debt in time, why should they call after all these years? And besides that, you cancelled it and everyting, right? So why would they call you? When cancelling didn't they tell you about this 'debt'? And btw... as Jeremy told you, do write them a formal (of course) letter.

Yah. I'm definitely writing them.
