Paypal's free credit card payment facility
Paypal can accept credit card payment. This seems to be a good option for a start up online store or business. You don't have to pay for a set up fee and monthly maintenanance or subscription fee. What's the catch here?

This is a good Paypal service for online entrepreneurs . Paypal needs to exist so it must collect a certain percentage from your sales for using its credit card payment gateway. I don't consider it as a catch. Rather, it is drawback since consumers must sign up with Paypal to be able to pay via credit card. I find this a bit inconvenient since not all are eligible to open a Paypal account.

Paypal is definately an option for sites starting out, but in my opinion you should offer direct credit card processing at some point. There are two reasons:

Credit card processing rates are generally lower when you go through your own provider instead of paypal.

I think it makes you site look somewhat unprofessional to not accept credit cards directly and force people to paypal. Not everyone has a paypal account and you'll loose a percentage of your customers by doing this.

Yes, agree a % of the customers might be lost, but that does not mean that your website will look unprofessional. It's just a security thing, can be inconvenient but it's all about security, I think.

PayPal is a very convenient set up and sometimes will enthuse your customers on throught the buying process. There are the other small percentage out there that are either angry or banned by paypal and they refuse to associate themselves with the likes of their business methods. Also in that small percentage are the ones that haven't used paypal and do not want to be bothered with it and they'd rather sling their credit card number in and make the purchase. So it can be a win win lose situation. We are human, afterall

I am not too happy with paypal fees at ALL.

Well I have an unverified Paypal account, planning to verify it, but anyways I work as a freelancer and if I receive a credit payment I have to pay 5.9% of the sum of money + $0.30 or something like that, I mean come on, that is not fair!!
