About Student Credit Cards!
Hello,

I am 18 years old and I just open a Bank Account [Savings and Checking] and will attend College the end of August 2008. I am wondering if it will be hard to obtain a [College] Student Credit Card, since I have no Credit History [except my Bank Account]. Also, can I apply for a Student Card now even though technically I am not attending College this moment [will attend this Fall]?

Also, do you think it will impossible to obtain a American Express Blue Cash for Students? I am thinking that [if I get approved] I will first start off with the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card for College Student, since I have read this is the best Student Card there is, and then like in 6-12 Months, apply for the American Express Student Card [and hopefully by then, I will at least a good Credit History if I take care of my Credit Card]. I heard it is hard to get accepted for a American Express Card. What you people think about this?

Thanks,
Saint Ignatius

P.S, I know about Department Store Credit Cards, and to me, this is a waste of time because I am not a "shop" freak. I rather get a Student Credit Card

Saint Ignatius,

Seems like you are headed in the right direction! I know you said you aren't really up for the department store credit card but, even just getting one will help you and then you can just cut it up..don't close the account, they say it hurts your credit. I have never applied for a student credit card so I am not sure what you will need (if anything) to prove you are a student. Here is our section for Student Credit Cards. Hope it helps and good luck!

Keep us informed..

Thank-you.

I guess I agree that getting one department store credit card will not hurt. Will it be hard for me to be approved for one? Should I apply for both the department store credit card and the "credit card" at the same time? I heard that applying for two cards at the same time hurt your credit. So, should I apply for the department store credit card before applying for my student credit card?

I spoke to a Citi worker through the phone, and he told me that even though I do not have a Credit History [other than my bank account], I will get approve for the "Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card for College Student" or there other Student Credit Cards. He said this is the reason why they offer Student Credit Cards [to build up there credit and eventually will be able to get a more advance card]. I was happy when I heard that!

Thanks, I will keep you up-to-date
